Paragliding Carabiners for Solo, Tandem and Special Applications
The right paragliding carabiner is a key connection element between the harness and riser. Depending on the equipment, different designs, materials, locking systems and webbing widths are available. Our range includes lightweight aluminium carabiners, robust stainless-steel versions and specialised models for lightweight or higher-load setups.
Important selection criteria include weight, breaking load, webbing width and locking system. Lightweight aluminium carabiners can help reduce overall equipment weight and are particularly interesting for weight-conscious solo setups. Stainless-steel carabiners, on the other hand, offer higher breaking loads and, depending on the model, can also be suitable for tandem or higher-load applications. The manufacturer's approval must always be taken into account.
Locking systems also differ, including Twist-Lock, Auto-Lock and Slide-Auto-Lock designs. For specialised applications, the range also includes release carabiners as well as models designed for different webbing widths and applications.
A common misconception concerns the replacement interval: A carabiner does not automatically have to be replaced five years after its manufacturing date. When stored correctly, in dry conditions and protected from light, an unused carabiner can have an unlimited service life, depending on the manufacturer. EDELRID, for example, specifies no time limit for carabiners and connectors when stored under optimal conditions and unused.
Once a carabiner is put into service, the manufacturer's specific requirements apply. AUSTRIALPIN, for example, specifies a maximum service life of 5 years or 1,500 flying hours from first use, whichever comes first.
Regardless of the stated replacement interval, any carabiner showing cracks, deformation, corrosion, significant damage or signs of unusual loading must be removed from service immediately. The manufacturer's specifications, actual use and the condition of the carabiner should always be considered together.
