Soft Links for Lightweight and Flexible Connections
Soft links are lightweight connection elements made from high-strength fibres such as Dyneema and provide an interesting alternative to conventional metal connections. In paragliding, they can be used to connect risers and harnesses and, depending on the system, may also be used for rescue parachute connections.
The main advantages are their low weight and flexible construction. This makes them particularly interesting for lightweight equipment, Hike & Fly setups and weight-conscious harnesses. Their flexible design can also allow multi-axis loading. Our range includes soft link systems from Niviuk, U-Turn, Kortel and BGD.
However, not all soft links are designed for the same application. Models differ in terms of breaking load, size, construction and intended use. For example, the BGD soft link in our range is specifically intended for solo paraglider and riser applications, while other systems are designed for riser-to-harness or rescue parachute connections.
When choosing a soft link, weight should therefore not be the only consideration. The manufacturer's intended application, the required breaking load and correct installation are essential. A soft link is an alternative to a metal carabiner – but not a universal replacement for every connection.
